Call for papers: Addiction treatment access and utilization among criminal justice involved populations

New Content ItemAddiction Science & Clinical Practice is requesting submissions for a special issue of research studies on addiction treatment access and utilization among criminal justice involved populations.

People with criminal justice involvement – including people in jails or prisons, on diversion, at the time of arrest, or in community corrections – have a high prevalence of substance use disorders and may be at risk for poor health outcomes. During the transition from criminal justice contexts to the community, many individuals experience fragmented care which can interrupt treatment for addiction and other chronic health conditions. People with untreated substance use disorders may struggle to maintain housing, employment, and family relationships, which may further negatively impact their access to health care.

Despite research and programming dedicated to supporting criminal justice populations, important knowledge gaps remain, including:

  •  Models for providing effective substance use disorder treatment and harm reduction services in criminal justice contexts, including in low and middle income countries.
  • Treatment and care coordination during the transition from incarceration to community settings.
  • The impact of criminal justice laws on substance use behavior, substance-related health outcomes, and access to treatment and other services.
  • Overdose prevention with diverse criminal justice populations.
  • Mental health and medical co-morbidities and their impact on addiction treatment among criminal justice populations.
  • Health disparities in access to and utilization of addiction treatment access among criminal justice populations.
  • Patient-centered or technologically supported interventions to improve access to and utilization of effective addiction treatment among criminal justice populations.
  • Implementation approaches to increase uptake of evidence-based prevention and treatment practices among criminal justice populations.

Submissions may include original research, reviews, meta-analyses or systematic reviews, treatment protocols, and conceptual models that advance understanding of how to improve health outcomes among criminal justice populations who have substances use disorders or use substances in the U.S. and international settings.

Manuscripts should be submitted via Editorial Manager. Submitted manuscripts will be screened by the Guest Editors before being sent out for peer review.
